How to Save doing online Shopping!!!

I've been spending some time reading and researching ways that people can save money shopping online. I find that each year I purchase more and more online so I myself am curious. If any of you have helpful tips please share. I'll be listing additional ways to save and interesting dels you might want to check out.

FYI Due to the holidays there aren't any Red Plum or Smart Source Coupon booklets in this Sunday paper.  You have to chuckle to learn that I purchased 4 Sunday papers and then remembered there aren't any this week! Note to self, buy more post it notes and a new organizer! :)

I noticed on the Giant Eagle website they are offering extra rewards at the checkout when you purchase any of the products offered between September 3-September 30, 2009.  Coupons print at register. Check it out on line to see exact products.  Also, I noticed they will be offering the chance to download ecoupons on your Giant Eagle card. I emailed them to findout when that will actually be available....haven't heard anything yet... I'l let you know when I get a response!  Happy Shopping :)

FYI  Dollar Tree sells Sunday Papers for $1.00.
The clerk at the register told me they keep them through Tuesday if they have any leftovers. You can also get them downtown at the main office. They sell them for 2 weeks after delivery date. Sometimes you just want to snag an extra one or two. :)

Walgreens 101: Learning The Game

I’ve never formally written a post on how to play the “Drugstore Game” at Walgreens, so I’d like to take a moment to introduce you to their Register Rewards program.


When you purchase certain items and/or a certain dollar amount of items, a coupon will print out that is good on your next purchase at Walgreens.


To maximize your savings the key is to combine a Register Rewards producing deal or a great sale price with a manufacturer’s coupon and possibly even a store coupon. This allows you to purchase items at the lowest possible price so you can build your stockpile at a minimal cost.


However, there are some important differences that you need to be aware of to take advantage of the program to its fullest:


Walgreens does NOT require the use of a store loyalty card to earn Register Rewards, aka RRs.


You will only earn RRs once per deal per transaction. In other words, if Excedrin is producing $2 in RRs in a given week, you must purchase each bottle in a separate transaction to earn the Register Rewards. If you purchase 3 bottles in one transaction, you would only receive $2 in RRs.

RRs cannot be “rolled” on like transactions. Using the Excedrin example again, you could not purchase one bottle of Excedrin and use the RRs received to purchase a second bottle. The Register Rewards will not print out when the second transaction is completed. Instead to roll RRs, you need to alternate it with another deal. So if Pantene was producing $2 in RRs as well that week, you could purchase the Excedrin, use the Excedrin RRs to purchase your Pantene, and then turn around and use the Pantene RRs to purchase the Excedrin again and so on.


While Register Rewards are essentially cash, the Walgreens registers treat them as manufacturer coupons. The problem with this is that Walgreens only allow you to use as many manufacturer coupons as items on the transaction. This creates a need for “filler items” if you have a coupon for every item you’re purchasing and wish to pay with a Register Reward. Filler items are inexpensive items that you add to an order so you have a non-coupon item that will allow your Register Rewards to be processed.


There is some debate about the best order to hand over your RRs and coupons at checkout. The method that I’ve found to work best personally is Register Rewards first, Walgreen’s store coupons second, and manufacturer’s coupons last. Feel free to change it up if it’s not working well for you.


Finally, a word to the wise – treat your RRs like cash. They cannot be replaced if lost. Generally Register Rewards expire two weeks from when they are generated, so watch those expiration dates!  Thank you Dealseekingmom for your awesome Walgreens How to Post!

-We accept two kinds of coupons: Target issued coupons and manufactured coupons.
-We'll accept one Target coupon and one manufacture coupon for the same item., unless either coupon prohibits it.
-We can't give cash back if the face value of the coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item, in that case we'll adjust the value of the coupon to equal the price of the item.
-We can't accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
-All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier at the time of sale.
-Target does NOT price match with other retailers.

A manufacturer’s coupon is a piece of paper with a discount for a specified product printed on it. The coupon can be used at most stores that carry the specified product. To receive your discount you must purchase the product and give the cashier the coupon. The cashier will scan the coupon and the coupon amount will be deducted from your purchase. You then pay for the remainder of the purchase.



Coupons may only be used once. You may not buy ten boxes of cereal and scan the coupon for $1 off cereal ten times. You may use one coupon per indicated items purchased. If you have two coupons, to save $1 on one box of cereal, you can buy two boxes and use both coupons. The coupon will say “one coupon per purchase.” This means you may not use both $1 coupons on one box. If you purchase two boxes then you may use two coupons. The coupon will tell you how many items you need to purchase.



There is a way to use more than one coupon per item. You may not buy one package of diapers and use ten coupons on it. You may only use one of your coupons on the diapers. You may, however, combine one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon on one item. Target has store coupons that you can print online and so does Meijer; Walgreens have their own coupons printed in their flyer. You may, also, use one manufacture coupon and one ecoupon together. Kroger is the only store I know of that you can download ecoupons directly to your shopper card and also use a paper coupon along with the ecoupon. “Stacking” coupons like I have mentioned above is one of the best ways to save! Below I will list the sources to download electronic coupons to your Kroger card and printable coupon sources.



Photocopying coupons is illegal. You can however obtain multiples of coupons in different ways. You can buy multiple papers, buy them from ebay, or order multiples from a coupon clipping service such as, thecouponclippers.com. There are other sources, such as, magazines, in store isle blinkies and tear sheets, product peelies and product hang tags.



Read the wording of the coupon and ignore the picture! Manufacturer’s usually put a picture of their most expensive product on the coupon to make you think that is what you have to buy. If you actually read the terms of the coupon, it will usually say “save on ANY brand xyz product.” That means you can buy even the least expensive product and still save with the coupon! Check the details on the coupon regarding specific item sizes required for the coupon usage.



You can use a coupon on an item that is on sale or clearance too! Occassionally I will have a store clerk tell me otherwise, but it is usually cleared up with a kind chat with a manager.
If a product rings up higher than advertised or they miss one of your coupons, let them know. It rarely takes more than a minute at customer service and they can answer any questions.



If you are using coupons correctly then shop with confidence. Sometimes the cashiers are just misinformed. Be calm and confident when you explain why you can use the coupon. If the cashier still doesn’t accept it, and you still have questions they will usually call for the manager. They are usually very helpful.

It is very exciting for me to find out that I can double up on coupons at Kroger by using paper coupons and coupons electronically downloaded on my Kroger Savings Card!!! The ecoupons are automatically deducted at the register when scanned.

Wow, I’ve decided to take a leap of faith and plunge into this blog world! I'm an "Empty Nester" stay at home wife and mother who loves the Lord. I am learning how to save money by making wiser choices in my spending. It's about time, as I haven't always lived a frugal grocery store life. Coupons seemed like a waste of time to me until a friend introduced me to an easier approch that I’m really excited about!
